Qadeeshat Aloho (Trisagion)
Holy are You, O God. Holy are You, O Strong One. Holy are You, O Immortal One. Have mercy on us.
In Syriac tradition: Qadeeshat Aloho, Qadeeshat Hayeltono, Qadeeshat Lo Moyouto, etraham 'lain.
- Purpose
- Adoration: the thrice-holy praise of God at the heart of Syriac worship, echoing the angels' cry in Isaiah 6:3.
- How to pray
- Sing or recite it slowly, standing, letting each of the three acclamations land before the plea for mercy.
- When & how long
- Sung in the Maronite Qurbono (Divine Liturgy), especially before the Gospel, and fitting any time as a short act of adoration; under a minute.
- Source & tradition
- Ancient Trisagion hymn of the Syriac churches, prayed in the Maronite liturgy for well over a millennium. Traditional; English renderings vary slightly between eparchies.
- Spiritual fruit
- Reverence and recollection: tradition understands it as joining the worship of heaven rather than asking for anything.
