Dafne Gutierrez was a Catholic mother of four in Phoenix, Arizona. She suffered from benign intracranial hypertension - increased pressure inside the skull - which damages the optic nerves by constriction. In 2012 the condition cost her the vision in her right eye; in November 2015, her left eye failed as well. She was legally blind, and beginning to suffer seizures. For more than a year she learned to live without sight - and, she feared, without ever seeing her children again.
In January 2016, Saint Charbel's relics came to St Joseph Maronite Church in Phoenix as part of their American tour. Gutierrez was not a Maronite Catholic - her sister encouraged her to go. On January 16 she prayed before the relics, went to confession, and was anointed with blessed oil by the pastor, Father Wissam Akiki. She recalled that immediately afterward her body felt "different."
The sequence that followed is documented in her medical record. The next morning, still impaired, she called her ophthalmologist; an exam the following day showed her still legally blind, with abnormal optic nerves. Two days later a second ophthalmologist measured her vision at a perfect 20/20 - with completely normal optic nerves. A week later, her original ophthalmologist confirmed it: normal vision, normal exam. Her seizures stopped as well.

Before-and-after images told the story: "We have pictures to confirm that the optic disc was chronically atrophied," she told the National Catholic Register. "In the post-healing pictures, her optic disc is back to normal... That is why I, as a medical doctor, have no explanation." The committee's written conclusion: "After a thorough physical exam, extensive literature search and review of all medical records, we have no medical explanation and therefore believe this to be a miraculous healing through the intercession of St. Charbel."
The case was examined at the level of the Maronite Eparchy: the medical committee's review was commissioned by the Church, and Bishop Abdallah Elias Zaidan publicly attributed the healing to Saint Charbel's intercession, writing that he hoped it would inspire the faithful "to seek the spiritual sight." That is a bishop's recognition, not a Vatican declaration - the case was not sent to Rome as part of a canonization cause.
