The story on Kalverstraat
According to the Society of the Silent Walk, a seriously ill man in Amsterdam received Communion on March 15, 1345. He then vomited, and what he had brought up was thrown into a fire. The next morning, the host was said to have been found intact among the ashes. A priest took it to the parish church, but the tradition says it appeared again in the man’s house twice. These are events as handed down in a medieval devotional account, not physical observations this site can independently verify.

From chapel to procession
A chapel was later built where the event was believed to have occurred, and a procession made Amsterdam a place of pilgrimage. The annual public procession ended after the city’s 1578 change to Protestant government, when Catholic worship was restricted. The Catholic community kept the memory in more private forms, including at the Begijnhof chapel. The photograph here shows that later chapel, not the medieval site or the alleged surviving host.

The silent walk today
The Society describes a nighttime Silent Walk along the old route, without banners or spoken prayer, as a continuation of the devotion. In a 2025 lecture, the bishop of Haarlem-Amsterdam placed the 1345 story within the history of Eucharistic worship. The existence of a long-standing pilgrimage and a bishop’s commemoration establishes a living Catholic tradition; this page does not claim a modern Vatican investigation or scientific proof of the medieval event.
