A complicated human story
The Diocese of Santarém recounts a woman in a painful marriage who removed a consecrated host from church after seeking help from a sorceress. In the tradition, the cloth holding the host began to bleed. Later, she and her husband saw light from the chest where she had put it. They told the parish priest, and the host was brought back to the church.

A sanctuary in the city
The Church of Saint Stephen is now the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Miracle. The diocese describes centuries of local processions and devotion associated with the host. The story must not be used to excuse abuse in the woman’s marriage; her suffering deserves compassion, not blame.

When did it happen?
The diocese gives 1266, or 1247 according to some chroniclers. That difference is part of the historical record. This page does not claim that either year is settled.
