Blessed Estephan Nehme
Blessed Estephan Nehme (1889-1938) was a Lebanese Maronite monk of the Lebanese Maronite Order - the order of Saint Charbel. He lived a hidden life of prayer and farm work, was beatified in 2010 after a recognized miracle, and is venerated at Kfifan, where his body is reported to remain intact.

A Farmer's Son from Lehfed
Youssef Nehme - Joseph in English - was born in March 1889 in the mountain village of Lehfed, in the Jbeil district of Lebanon, the youngest of seven children in a devout Maronite family. He studied at the school of Our Lady of Grace run by the Lebanese Maronite Order, and grew up working his father's fields.
A tale from his childhood has stayed with the villages of Jbeil: watching his father's animals one day, the boy saw a badger slip into a cave, dug where it vanished, and uncovered a spring - still known today as the Badger's Fountain. In 1905, two years after his father's death, he entered the order's novitiate at the monastery of Saints Cyprian and Justina in Kfifan. On August 23, 1907 he made his first vows, taking the name Estephan - Stephen - after the patron saint of his birthplace.
The Brother Who Worked
Brother Estephan never became a priest. He spent thirty-one years as a lay brother of the order, moving between its monasteries - Mayfouk, Houb, Kettara, Jbeil - working the fields and gardens and lending his hands to carpentry and construction. He made his solemn vows on April 13, 1924, at the monastery of St Anthony in Houb. Other monasteries asked for him by name: the brothers wanted the worker who prayed.
He called the land itself "a school of sanctity." During the famine of the First World War, which devastated Mount Lebanon, he carried food from the monasteries to families who were starving. Those who worked beside him remembered his generosity, his sound judgment, and his quiet compassion for anyone in difficulty.
"God Sees Me"
If one sentence carries his whole spirituality, it is the one his brothers heard him repeat constantly: "God sees me." Not as a warning but as a companionship - the steady awareness that every hour in the field, every plank of carpentry, every silence was lived in front of Someone. He kept the order's constitutions with exactness and was known for an intense devotion to the Mother of God.
The same honest distinction this site keeps for Saint Charbel and St Nimatullah applies here: the record of his lifetime is not a list of prodigies. It is a reputation - a brother so transparently good that the monasteries competed to have him, and so hidden that almost nothing of him was written down until after his death.
Death and the Intact Body
In his final months he returned to Kfifan, and there he died on August 30, 1938, aged forty-nine. He was buried in the monastery cemetery. On March 10, 1951 his tomb was opened, and his body was found intact - a sign the Maronite faithful received as a seal on a life of hidden purity. Pilgrims began to come; the order formally submitted his cause to Rome in 2001, and Pope Benedict XVI declared him Venerable on December 17, 2007.
The Miracle and the Beatification
On March 27, 2010 the Holy See announced that Pope Benedict XVI had recognized a miracle through Brother Estephan's intercession - the healing which contemporary reporting identifies as that of Sister Marina Nehme, his niece and a Maronite religious who had prayed to her uncle for years. We report the Church's finding; accounts retold beyond it vary, and we do not add to them.
On June 27, 2010, tens of thousands gathered outside the monastery of Kfifan - among them Lebanon's president and the Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir - as Archbishop Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, read the decree of beatification on the Pope's behalf. That same morning in Rome, Benedict XVI greeted the news at the Angelus: "Blessed Estephan Nehme, in the world Joseph, was beatified this morning in Lebanon... I warmly rejoice with our Lebanese brothers and sisters and entrust them with great affection to the new Blessed's protection." His feast is kept on August 30.
Visiting His Tomb at Kfifan
Blessed Estephan's body rests at the monastery of Saints Cyprian and Justina in Kfifan, in the Batroun district of North Lebanon - the same monastery that holds the tomb of St Nimatullah al-Hardini, Saint Charbel's teacher. One visit honors both. Kfifan sits a short drive from the Annaya-Dimane circuit; our pilgrim's guide to Annaya covers the practicalities of the region, and the places of Saint Charbel's Lebanon page maps how the monastic sites connect.
